Mga magbubukid ng Gitnang Luzon, nagtipon para sa KALBARYO NG BAYAN

Matagumpay na naisagawa ang "KALBARYO NG BAYAN", isang penitensya ng mga manggagawang bukid at kabataan ng Nueva Ecija nitong nakaraang ika-26 ng Marso sa pangunguna ng Samahan ng mga Magsasaka Laban sa CLEx at sa pakikipagtulungan ng Alyansa ng mga Magbubukid ng Gitnang Luzon (AMGL).

Ang nasabing penitensya ay nagsimula sa isang misa sa Iglesia Filipina Independiente sa bayan ng Nampicuan, at tumuloy sa mga kalapit bayan na Cuyapo, Guimba, Sto. Domingo, Quezon, at Aliaga.

Ang penitensyang bayan ay isinagawa bilang protesta sa pagtatayo ng Central Luzon Expressway (CLEx) at ng North Luzon East Expressway (NLEEx) at magpanawagan para sa isang maka-masang sistema ng transportasyon. Kalbaryo sa mga magsasaka at mamamayan ng Nueva Ecija ang proyektong Central Luzon Expressway Phase 1 at 2  (CLEx) at North Luzon Expressway - East (NLEx East), ayon sa Alyansa ng mga Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luson - Nueva Ecija (AMGL – Nueva Ecija), Alyansa ng Mamamayan Laban sa CLEx (ALMA-CLEx), AMGL at Anakpawis Partylist-Gitnang Luzon, dahil ito ay magtutulak ng  malawakang pangangamkam ng lupa at pagpapalayas sa mga magsasaka at mga manggagawang bukid.

Significance of the Province

Nueva Ecija is publicly known as the rice-granary of the Philippines.  Its vast agricultural lands are cultivated with rice that farmers consider their main source of livelihood.  Rice cultivation is also the culture of Nueva Ecija farmers.  The province’ 158,269-hectare rice lands ranked 2nd in the country, but irrigated lands of 119,459-hectares are the biggest among provinces.  It also ranked 2nd in production, harvesting about 560,379 metric tons or 7.29 million sacks of rice, but first in irrigated palay of 462,185 metric tons.  Its production compose 9% of the country’s total and 43% of the region’s total.  Irrigated lands compose about 75% of the its total rice lands, thus, it is very clear that agriculture is distinguishedly productive.  Rice farms yield about 80 to 100 cavans per hectare with some reaching to 120 cavans.  Plain lands in the province are more than half which are of high potential for agricultural production.

Essential to the province’ agricultural productivity, are the farmers who sturdily cultivate rice lands that compose about 28% of it total land area of 575,133-hectares. The province’ population compose 19% of the region ranking 3rd and its land area 27% being the biggest.  Nueva Ecija also composed majority of the farmer-beneficiaries of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).  Based on its 2010 accomplishment, 95,855 Nueva Ecija farmer-beneficiaries compose 36% of the region’s total tilling 169,375-hectares or 42% of the region’s total. 

Nueva Ecija is totally a significant province in the country, contributing majorly in the country’s total rice supply and it is also a model of the bankruptcy of CARP as the government’s claimed number of FBs is questionable as farmers are presently facing massive cancellations of Certificate of Land Ownership Awards (CLOA), Certificate of Land Transfer (CLT) and Emancipation Patents (EP).  Rice production is also threatened by the government’s program that would result vast land use conversion.  Nueva Ecija is a potential  ground for the struggle for genuine land reform and its farmers a powerful force of the peasant movement.

Viewpoint holds Konsultahang KABATAAN

Viewpoint, alongside KABATAAN Partylist (KPL) and College Editors Guild of the Philippines - Central Luzon (CEGP-CL) gathered student-journalists, student-leaders, and youth-leaders of the out-of-school youth in the provincial youth leaders' assembly entitled Konsultahang KABAATAN last March 15 at Bishop Balce Hall, St. Nicolas of Tolentine Cathedral, del Pilar St., Cabanatuan City.

The said event, themed "Kabataang Novo Ecijano, Kaisa sa Pagbabago" featured  politically-charged fora, the presentation of the Youth Covenant, and Educational Discussions about Philippine social realities, provincial youth situation, and the peasant struggle in the province. Speakers included Mr. Jerome Estavillo of College Editors Guild of the Philippines-Central Luzon; Ms. Niña Valdez of Rural Missionaries of the Philippines; and Mr. Butch Miranda of Alyansa ng mga Magbubukid ng Gitnang Luzon.

The event culminated with the establishment and planning of the KPL Nueva Ecija Chapter, as well as the signing of the Youth Agenda. Dan Kevin Roque

Eleksyon na naman. Sa wakas, nagka-eleksyon ulit dito sa ating Pamantasan. Isa lang ang ibig sabihin nito: umiiral pa rin ang demokrasya. Pero hindi ang eleksyon ang mahalaga, hindi ang pagpili, bagkus ay ang mga magaganap pagkatapos ng pagpili.

Lahat naman ng mag-aaral ay may mga hinaing at mga kahilingan, kaya naman talagang mahirap maupo sa posisyon ng kapangyarihan dahil sa’yo mapupunta ang lundo ng pag-asa at mga hiling nila. Pero magdadagdag lang ako ng kaunti sa’yong mga intindihin.

Sa iyong pag-upo sa pwesto at panunumpa sa katungkulan, tinatanggap mo ang tiwalang ibinigay sa’yo ng mga kapwa mo mag-aral. Hindi ito simpleng seremonyas lamang upang maging pormal ang iyong panunungkulan. Ang unang hiling ko sa’yo ay manumpa ka ng gamit ang iyong puso at hindi ang iyong bibig.

Ang pag-upo sa pwesto ay parang pagtuli lang. Hindi isang pukpok lang ang pagiging pangulo. Mahabang gamutan yan. Sana’y kaya mong manindigan sa mga pangakong binitawan mo at tiisin ang batikos at sakit na ibabato sa’yo Kailangan mo kasing ipakita na matapang ka, sapagkat ikaw ang tutularan nila.

Alam naman naming na may ambisyon ka, kaya ka nga tumakbo, ‘di ba? Ngunit sana, hindi lamang ambisyon ang tingnan mo. Maraming Araullian din ang nag-aambisyon: nag-aambisyong makatapos ng pag-aaral, mapaglingkuran nang tama, tanggapin ang dapat ay sa kanila.

Utang mo sa kanila ang pag-upo sa pwesto, kaya utang na loob, PAKINGGAN MO SILA! Tama na ang pagbubulag-bulagan. Alam nating may mga reklamo ang mga kapwa natin Araullian, bigyan natin sila ng tinig, Palayain mo ang utak mo sa pagkakakulong. Masahol pa sa mangmang ang mangmang na magmamarunong.

Ano nga ulit yung plataporma mo? Kailangan ng Araullo ng mga programang papakinabangan talaga ng mga mag-aaral at hindi yung pampabango lang ng resume mo. Kailangan namin ng mga programang masaya; baka maburyong ang mga mag-aaral. Sabi nga sa English, “All work and no play makes Juan a dull boy.” Pero sana yung kasayahang may katuturan naman.

Huwag mo nang balikan ang pagkakamali ng nakaraan, huwag mo na silang batikusin pa. Huwag ka na rin mag-isip ng dahilan sakaling pumalpak ka; ang pagdadahilan ay para lang sa mga taong ‘di kayang harapin ang katotohanan. Maniwala kang kaya mong baguhin ang sistema, pero huwag umasa sa himala dahil wala pang nananalo sa lotto na hindi tumataya!

Araullian voters prepare for midterm Elections

Araullians are all geared up for the upcoming May 2013 elections as they took part in the voters’ education seminar organized by the Kaya Natin (KN) Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership last March 5, 2013 at the AU Gymnasium. The program, named R18: Kung Kaya Natin, Kakayanin Mo Rin, aims to change the paradigm of the elections by empowering the youth, according to KN member and AUSSG President Kevin Vidar. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Gerarda Rivera started the program as she tackled the importance of one’s voting power. KN Media Relations Officer and Youth Coordinator Shylynne Castillo emphasized the significant number of youth in the voting population.  KN Core Group member Jess Lorenzo, Poro Point Management President, and KN champ Florante Gerdan also imparted values regarding voting.
