Viper Manifesto

The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The ones who see things differently.” – Craig Tanimoto

It is very hard to convert a non-believer; to agitate and activate a passive, apathetic person. Especially, since the medium by which we reach the studentry is through writing. It is very easy to ignore a piece of paper that your fellow students labored for. And that has been Viewpoint’s story in the past year.

Despite all our efforts to reach the consciousness of the studentry, we have often been seen as renegades. Loose cannons. The crazy ones. From the very conception of Viewpoint, it has been maligned – we were called de facto, unofficial, underground, and a lot of other things. Every time we publish an issue, our opinion is condemned. There came a moment when even our silence is vilified. All because we see things differently. Just because we stir things up, because we want change.

Sadly, we were thought of as people who are not proud of the institution that we belong to. Seeing something wrong with the system and commenting on it doesn’t qualify us as prodigal sons and daughters of our alma mater. We just want to see improvement in the state of our beloved University. The system is not the institution, and the institution is not the system.

And while it is easy to doubt why we do this – why we say the things we say and do the things we do – let us remind everyone that if not for our drive to serve our fellow Araullians, we would have given up long ago. It is so much easier to just fade into the background. To be an ordinary student. Any pompous, self-serving propagandist could not have weathered the storms we have faced as a publication.

To clarify a few points, we reiterate what we have stated in our CEGP incident report: We do not see ourselves as anti-administration, instead we see ourselves as a pro-students. It just so happened that there are points where the two philosophies go in different directions. Also, we do not seek personal benefit from what we do. We wish only to contribute to the pride of the Araullian community, to add to its already rich and wonderful heritage of student-leadership and excellence.

So here we are. We remain standing and strong, despite many attempts to silence us. That alone is proof of victory – not our victory, but the triumph of democracy, of our inherent right to freedom of speech and expression. And we will remain strong, as long as there are student interests and rights to protect. As the AUSSG’s credo goes: “For the student’s rights, we remain!”

True universities are places of light and learning; places that foster critical thinking and encourage free thought and speech; places that value the individuality and dynamism of its students. Thus, we proudly claim that our existence is a proof that our beloved Araullo qualifies as one of them.Dan Kevin Roque

That Bloody Day

That Bloody Day
Dan Kevin Roque

For I will ever remember,
That bloody day of November,
Chilling my bones and making me shiver,
As I read the evening paper.

For thou art none but heroes,
Argus for the Filipinos,
Thou art fighters of freedom,
Saviors of my soul, poet that I am.

Where hast thou crusade led?
Thou seeketh thine truth and yet,
A hail of bullets and thou bled,
Leading thou to thy death.

Crimson sky and scarlet soil,
Bodies beneath iron, thine souls recoil,
Succumb to the onslaught of madness,
Essaying from the Lords of Darkness.

Is it the fate that for me awaits?
Is my passion but a ticket to the Pearly Gates?
Oh Lady Justice bring thy scale,
And thy Bible written in Braille.

Must I embark on the path that cry,
Of dirges for the dead?
Oh Odin, Lord of the Gallows,
Pour me three mugs of mead.

For nine nights I stood by the tree,
And the secrets of the world was opened to me.
For nine days I witnessed the truth,
Thineliberty and mine is that struggle’s fruit.

Blood rained that November,
That I will always remember.
But for freedom I shall fight,
Even in this perpetual half-light.

Dan Kevin Roque is an AB English Language student at Araullo University-PHINMA. He is currently the Managing Editor of Viewpoint. His poem, "That Bloody Day" is one of the three poems in his entry that received the Special Citation for Poetry in the 8th Gawad Emman Lacaba, the annual literary contest of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines-Luzon. It is a commemoration of the Maguindanao Massacre and a plea to stop impunity.

CMA and Presidential Scholars Go Green

College of Management and Accountancy (CMA) students, Presidential Scholars, and student journalists open up the doors to a greener future as they take part on Araullo University – PHINMA’s “The Green Project 2.0”. The said event was done in accordance with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) National Greening Program (NGP) held at Sitio Alorma, Doña Josefa, Palayan City last July 28, 2012.

Led by Forester and Chief Protection Officer of CENRO-Cabanatuan, August V. Fariñas, the AU students, specifically, members of Junior Marketing Association, Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants – AU Chapter, Hospitality and Tourism Management Society, Junior Banker’s Club, Presidential Scholars, ViewPoint, and faculty participated on the tree growing initiative as part of the 430-hectare wide reforestation of the said location. On that day alone, a total of 500 Narra seedlings were planted on a hectare of land through the joint efforts of CMA and CON students, faculty, and CSDL staff.

Started last July 13, 2012, the project aims to plant 5000 trees across a ten-hectare area over a year. According to Darren J. Gonzales, Student Welfare and Community Involvement (SWCI) Unit Coordinator, the Green Project is an advocacy of the University not only to raise environmental awareness but also to encourage Araullians to actively join the crusade for a greener country. This project also supports the world-wide campaign against global warming and climate change. Jillian Vergara

A Brand New Viewpoint Kicks Off Paper Overhaul

Student writers of Araullo University - PHINMA who attended the
recently concluded News Writing and Press Workshop.

Sandigan, the University’s official student publication, looks forward to a major transformation as the Center for Student Development and Leadership (CSDL) initiates changes in the school paper, with the name Viewpoint defining its reinvention.

CSDL’s Student Welfare and Community Involvement (SWCI) coordinator Darren J. Gonzales proposed to modify the identity, format and the system of the publication together with the existing members of its editorial board as well as a new breed of writers; he believes that the school paper is “our product”, a reflection of the students’ potentials as individuals and the University’s accomplishment of its vision and mission.

As a headstart, the CSDL conducted a Basic News Writing and Press Workshop last July 8 under the mentorship of Mr. Joseph G. Navarro, Public Relations, Communications and Events Officer of Caritas Manila, Inc.

Aside from trainings on campus journalism as part of the intended improvement, Viewpoint will be brought to an online platform through a blog to conform with the students’ inclination to social media as well as elicit instant feedback from them. Darren Gonzales
