Punctuation Philosophies

This is the 13th and last poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Punctuation Philosophies
Ma. Gladys Repollo

Semi-colon, apostrophe, question mark, comma
ellipsis at tuldok. Isiningit man o nasa hulihan,

The semi-colon establishes a relationship
between two independent clauses.
Bakit hindi na lang niya sila hayaang
maging two separate sentences?

Itong apostrophe, masyadong possessive.
Kailan pa naging pagmamay-ari
ng salita ang kapwa niya? Meron
naman silang kahulugan kahit nag-iisa.

Ang queston mark nama'y nababalot
ng hiwaga; ikaw mismo'y magtatanong.
Tunay bang ang pangungusap ay nag-uusisa,
o sadyang mahirap lang itong tuldukan?

The comma, however, complicates things.
Maraming idinudugtong na mga ideya,
isa lang naman ang nais sabihin. Ang buhay,
nagiging compound na, complex pa.

Paborito ng ilan ang ellipsis dahil kapag
idinugtong sa sentence, instant veil of mystery.
Parang question mark, nagpapaasa lang.
Pero siguro, meron lang ding hindi maamin.

Ngayon, talakayin natin ang tuldok.
Isa lang ang trabaho nito: end a statement.
Halimbawa: Hindi na kita mahal.
Simple lang di'ba? No frills whatsoever.
Ayan, nasabi ko na.

Ma. Gladys  Repollo  is a  Bachelor in Secondary Education senior in Araullo University-PHINMA and is the Editor-in-Chief of Viewpoint.  She was inspired by the power of punctuation marks and how they affect the meaning of sentences. She believes that holding back or saying a lot more than required  create the same effect on relationships. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

The Long-gone Past

This is the 12th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

The Long-gone Past
Barry Sim

I open my eyes and welcome the light
That will reveal the next chapters of life
But something bothers the inside of me
My past, my past, it wants me to see

I close my eyes for a second, I wait
And I meet the past that I myself built
I have no idea what lies ahead
But still I dig deeper inside my head
It feels like a dream on a Christmas night
Everything is grainy, blurry and white
Whatever my mind wants me to realize
I should revisit every moment, fall or rise

I thought I’m alone in this small white world
Without nothing to see, to talk, to hold
But my mind surprises me even more
With a big white screen that shows me all

I watched, intrigued by the display of scenes
I am the center of this ideal dream
I hardly resist to laugh or to weep
With these true memories, hiding beneath

After a while of showing what is gone
It becomes unfamiliar, new, undone
Scenes shift to a remarkably new me
The light the future unveils before me

I am tempted at first to look and to watch
I realize that I should not know much
Too much knowledge may prove useful at first
But seeing alone is a selfish curse

I caught myself and walk out the vision
Open my eyes, thinking of my mission
To find the rationale behind my past
What would I perceive from the scenes they cast?

The realization then dawns on me
The past is not the real picture to see
I picture myself standing still and firm
The real picture is not inside my dream

No man is an island the saying goes
Sharing sentiments with someone who cares
That is the lesson that my mind portrays
As clear as a glass without any trace

I will myself to call upon the Lord
God, the Creator shows flashes so old
I will walk straight with HIM, I told myself
I’ll never be alone, he’ll always help

I feel new strength surging inside of me
I’m ready to face the straight path I see
The path I see holds my future again
But this time, I’m with my Lord to begin

Whatever danger of what lies ahead
I am not scared to face them head-to-head
I will welcome the year that comes after
I will walk beside HIM, knowing better.

Mga Tanong ni Maria

This is the 11th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Mga Tanong ni Maria
Jillian Vergara

Unang tanong, “Paano nagsimula?”

Ikalawang tanong, “Kailan nag-iba?”

Ikalimang tanong, “Bakit naniwala?”

Jillian Vergara is a BS Major in Accountancy junior in Araullo University-PHINMA and is a Staff Writer of Viewpoint.  This poem is based on a young woman's love story that ended sadly and too soon, and is inspired by the love stories of her barkada, Barney and Friends. She dedicates this poem to her friends Barney, Emily, Erika, Joana and R.A. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

This is the 10th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Nathan Neil Beronio

Pumapatak ang…
Mga luha ko kapag…
Nakikita ka…

Tandang-tanda ko…
Nung iniwan mo ako…
Sa Acad. Center…

Paalam, Kuya…
Sinabi mo sa akin…
Sabay talikod…

Tinalikuran…
Sinaksak, nilamutak…
Pusong kawawa…

Ako’y nilisan…
Sinaktan nang lubusan…
Para kanino?...

Para sa kanya?…
Ano bang meron siya at…
Ika’y nabihag?...

Oh, eh di sige…
It’s really your loss, not mine…
Bitter Ocampo…

"I love you, goodbye"…
Hanggang dito na lang ba?...
Walang “One More Try”?...

Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry that consists of 17 syllables, in three phrases of five, seven and five syllables respectively.

Nathan Neil Beronio is an  AB English senior in Araullo University-PHINMA and is the Associate Editor of Viewpoint.  He aims to encapsulate in the haikus he made the heartbreaks he experienced (and imagined) in 2012. How is this connected to 13b42013? After reading this, you might actually want the world to end already (or end the life of the author). This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

NUMBERS, Fearless or Fear Of?

This is the 9th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

NUMBERS, Fearless or Fear Of?
Diane Claire Malgapo

What makes me scream?
When I heard the number thirteen
Taking a hockey mask on Camp Crystal Lake
And riding an elevator on a Friday

I am afraid of the number seven
It looks like a scary scythe newly sharpened
Held by Grim Reaper that takes the soul of every person
Tombs and grave are his decorations

I am afraid of the number six
It makes me feel sick
From the sea mark the Beast
Emerges on earth and like dragon that speaks

I am afraid of the number one the most
With my mind to think who will lost
Being odd and the loneliest
Is drowning me in sadness

No matter what number has to say
I will still stick and stay
Going through this journey in Life
On the way to heaven on time

Diane Claire Malgapo is taking up AB Major in Political Science in Araullo University-PHINMA and is an Intern Photojournalist of Viewpoint.  Inspired from daily tragic events, this piece talks about how numbers remind her of fears brought about by lack of wisdom from above. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

Tuyot na Paraiso

This is the 8th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Tuyot na Paraiso
Bryan Joseph Peralta

Kaysarap mabuhay sa mundo
Makulay
Puno ng buhay
Isang Masayang paraiso

Mayuming kalikasan
Mistulang Bahagharing nasa alapaap
Kaysarap mangarap
Sa piling ng luntiang kapaligiran

May kalayaan bawat nilalang
Malayang tumakbo, malayang lumipad
Saan man mapadpad
Ligtas sa gabay ng Maylalang

Ang buhay ay Langit
Isang matamis na panaginip
Nais kong maidlip
Himlay sa mundong tila isang magandang awit.

Bagong milenyo’y dumating
Mundo’y nawasak, nabigo
Nilapastangan, binayo
Kasamaang taglay, saan galing?

Paraisong dati’y kaysarap pagmasdan
Parang papel na sinira’t dinumihan
Tinapon sa mabahong basurahan
Hanap-hanap ko, ngayo’y nasaan?

Ang dating matatayog na puno
Nangamatay!
Nawalan ng buhay
Kabunduka’y nakalbo

Kalikasang luhaan
Nagsusumamo, nagmamakaawa
Humihingi ng kaunting simpatya
Kaunting oras ating ilaan, kalikasa’y ating alagaan.

Bryan Joseph Peralta  is a  BS Accountancy student in Araullo University-PHINMA and a Staff Writer of Viewpoint. His love for nature and his awareness of its deterioration inspired him to write these verses. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

Kung Alam ko Lang

This is the 7th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Kung Alam Ko Lang
Christina Sanchez

Isang taong aking pinagkatiwalaan,
Tinuring na kapatid at kaibigan,
Ibinigay sa kanya ang mga kahilingan,
Kahilingang aking pinanindigan at ipinaglaban.

Ang mga masasayang alaala,
Aking nagugunita ngayo'y wala sya,
Asaran, kwentuhan, tampuhan at iyakan,
Mga kaganapang hindi ko makalimutan.

Ako'y naging bulag at bingi,
Hindi namansin at nakinig,
Dahil sa labis na pag-ibig,
Sa isang taong aking bukambibig.

Sakit at paghihirap ay nararanasan,
Dahil sa mga salitang binitiwan,
Ng iyong mapaglarong isipan,
Isipang puno ng mga kasinungalingan.

Kung alam ko lang sana,
Ang sa aki'y magiging bunga,
Ng iyong mga pagbabalatkayo,
Na nagiwan ng sugat sa aking puso.

Pagmamahal ko'y magtatapos na,
Sa isang katulad mong walang awa,
Ni pagpapahalaga sa mga masasaktan,
Ay di mo naisip at nagawa man lang.

Christina Sanchez is currently taking up Bachelor in Secondary Education, major in English and a Staff  Writer of Viewpoint. This poem represents a love without doubts. She dedicates this poem to the man she loves but then, this man lies to her and at the same time he is already committed to another woman. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Kabanata

This is the 6th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Kabanata
Joanne Carla De Tumol

Hindi namamalayan
Ngunit magtatapos nanaman
Ang isang taong punong magagandang samahan
At di malilimutang pagkakaibigan

Joanne Carla De Tumol  is a  BS Accountancy student in Araullo University-PHINMA and an Associate Producer of Viewpoint's New Media Arm, VPTV.  This poem is inspired by Joanne’s friends from the second semester of her Senior year and her newly found friends when she entered college. Unforgettable Year

This is the 5th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Unforgettable Year
Krisia Aira Nicolas

The year may pass
But will never be over,
Cause memories will last
And will be kept forever.

Reminiscing that time
When I met new friends
Who are there to guide me
And hold on till the end.

Then I found a family,
One that cares truly,
That supports and inspires me
To go on with my journey.

And I can still remember
That day in November,
When fate challenged us
And what we did gained a few trust.

But that made us stronger
Because we know what is right,
And that is to keep on moving
Even things are not light.

I know things happen
And there are reasons.
Maybe to teach me
To live with a vision.

Now I’m at the end
And I don’t have any regret,
Cause with these people
Is a year I’ll never forget.

Krisia Aira Nicolas is a BS in Accountancy student in Araullo University-PHINMA and a Staff Writer of Viewpoint. This poem is about the encounters that she had this year and what made it special for her. She dedicates this poem to her friends and her Viewpoint family. Time Machine

This is the 4th poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Time Machine
Sweet Cel dela Cruz

How I wish
I could have time to go back,
To change my decisions
and to erase my mistakes.

How I wish

I could tell them how sorry I am,
To wipe all the sadness and tears
into a dashing smile

I wished for a time machine

and waited for a long time
Until someone told me
the meaning of time.

Time is not a song,

paused when you're tired;
Rewinded when you missed;
Forwarded when you're bored.

Sweet Cel dela Cruz  is a  BS Secondary Education major in English student in Araullo University-PHINMA and an Associate Producer of Viewpoint's New Media Arm, VPTV.  This is  a poem about regrets and the passage of time - a subject everyone could well relate to. Stepping Stone

This is the 3rd poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

Stepping Stone
Pauline Joy Gelacio

The tears fell down on the floor,
Cause by the stabbing pain that sore.
I caught myself crying
Is it for nothing, or something?

This is such a very long story

Having a countless frequency
I indulged myself in happiness,
to the person I became obsessed.

I virtuously accept the rejections,

from the person of my confusions,
I analyzed things with perceptions
and hardly control the emotions.

I have still remembered

the days filled of laughters
On the twenty-fifth day of October
It all ends to never.

I am convicted to a year of sadness

Consisting of months of illnesses
Weeks that make me experience
the days with real happiness.

I count every second, cherished every minute

Embraced every moment and treasured the memories.
Farewell to a season of encrusted sorrow,
Hello to a great and bright tomorrow.

Pauline Joy Gelacio is a  BS Secondary Education major in English student in Araullo University-PHINMA and a Staff Writer of Viewpoint. She dedicates this poem to JBSJP. Whoever he is, he is sure a lucky man. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

If Only

This is the 2nd poem for 13b42013 Poetry Series.

If Only
Rouie Victoria Ramos

Can't believe it's true
There's something in you that makes me new
When I'm not with you, I feel blue
If only I can have any clue
That will help me know if it's really me and you

If only you know what I feel
I am deeply confused of what is real
I don't recognize this affection
I've fallen for you unconsciously

If only I could let this feelings burst
But I know I couldn't do it
Cause there's someone you love
And I don't have the right to be mad

If only I was the one you loved the first
Then my love for you will never wait
If only time can show you the truth
That I am deeply admiring you

Time, if we only have time
Time to prove my love to you
If only I could let everyone know that I love you
My love, if only you're mine

Rouie Victoria Ramos is a BS in Accountacy student in Araullo University-PHINMA and the Web Administrator of Viewpoint. She dedicates this poem to the man she loves but then, this man loves another woman. This poem is composed as a part of 13b42013  Poetry Series.

Sarapitik

The 13b42013 Poetry Series is Viewpoint's year-end project. We hope to inspire you with our 13 different perspectives about endings. However, we do not believe in doomsday, so this shall run until the 31st.

Sarapitik
Dan Kevin Roque

Isang paru-paro
Sa sapot ko'y dumapo
Ang magandang pakpak
Sa pag-igkas ay nahapo

Ako'y nagalak sa pagkaing nasilo
Makulay na pakpak ay nabigo
Na iahon ang kawawang paru-paro
Sa sedang patibong ko

Nagmamadali kong tinungo nahuling mariposa
"Tingnan mo, Inay, napakaganda"

Dan Kevin Roque is currently taking up AB English Language and is the Managing Editor of Viewpoint. This poem is inspired by the imagery of a spider and how, in the wild, hunger has the undertones of death. Composed as part of 13b42013, this is the story of FAMINE, the Third Horseman of Apocalypse.
